About / Biography

Introductory Letter: 

My name is Ernesto Alejandro Alvarez Ramirez, and I was born and raced in Cuba. In my homeland, I went through an extensive music education and earned several degrees: Bachelor’s Degree in Music. Conducting & Voice. Double Major Conducting & Composition. 

I moved to the USA in 2016, and I am an American citizen currently living in Ferndale, Michigan. I worked as a Music Director for the past 7 years for the Dioceses of Lansing and the Archdioceses of Detroit where I have gained a favorable reputation as a skillful and effective Music Director. I am a tenor and I had the opportunity to sing in several local churches and several venues around Metro Detroit including Detroit Opera House. I also teach piano and voice privately to kids and adults. 

I currently work as the Music Director at St.Thomas More Catholic Church in Troy, Michigan where I play piano, organ and conduct the choir. I am in charge of all ensembles, managing and hiring support musicians as well as creating the music program for all Masses, Liturgies and Church Events.  This year, I decided to submit a letter of resignation, and it was accepted. I committed to work until June 30 of 2025 or before, upon hiring my substitute. The reason for my resignation is my desire to expand my performance experiences and career opportunities. 

I am a very proficient pianist with great sight reading skills. I am highly social and very engaging with audiences.  I can play latin music, jazz, classical music, pop, etc.  Moreover, since I studied composition and conducting, I am very good at organizing and leading ensembles together, and I can write and arrange music depending on instrumentalists available. I am a vocal coach, so that is also something I can provide for singers onboard. I am a team player but also have very strong leadership skills as part of my  Conducting degree and experience. My preferences will be to play the piano as a soloist, piano bar entertainer, or as part of small acoustic ensembles like duets,  trios and quartets. I am open to supporting other musicians or ensembles if needed.

I am very excited to explore new genres, venues and audiences, as well as to collaborate with different musicians of diverse backgrounds, as I grow closer to creating my own musical project in the future. Furthermore, I am excited to create repertoires and music programs that could be tailored to any specific events that the Cruise might have.
